Artist Statement

As a painter, my goal is to create a visual connection to coastal elements that surround me on a daily basis. These paintings are an expression of my relationship to the raw power and beauty of nature. Through an exploration of elemental textures and surfaces, I aim to capture the essence of the coastal landscape and evoke subtle emotional responses in viewers. As opposed to creating a direct representation, my intention is to offer a supplemental vision of our environment. Each painting represents a moment in time, at various scales, gently inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the beauty and complexity of nature. Ultimately, my paintings are a celebration of the natural world and serve as a reminder of the awe-inspiring power and majesty of the ocean and its surroundings.

About the Artist

Donald Scott Masterson is a local Cannon Beach artist working in multiple genres and mediums. With projects ranging from Art Directing at Disney World and Universal Studios to walking the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival for his sculpting work in film, from large-scale Renaissance ceiling murals to fine art pieces in galleries, Donald strives to bring out the best look for his clients and patrons. If asked what medium he enjoys working with most, he will tell you, “All of them.” Beginning his professional career as a graphic designer at a record label in Nashville, Donald moved to Cannon Beach to paint and expand his understanding of the art world. Painting for commercial and private clients led him to new opportunities in film/television. As a Scenic Artist and Sculptor for over ten years, he’s been able to incorporate some of those techniques into his paintings and artwork.
